DOL’s Internet tax servicesThe state Department of Labor (DOL) is reminding everyone that its Tax Division has a number of easy-to-use internet tax applications that let employers provide information to the agency and fulfill their filing requirements. The agency’s Connecticut Internet Tax and Wage System ( CITWS), in place for the past three years, is the on-line filing application for the Connecticut Unemployment Tax. More than 12,000 employers each quarter are taking advantage of online filing and payment of their quarterly tax returns, but DOL says it still receives approximately 30,000 to 40,000 paper returns every quarter. The agency urges these employers to check out the free online filing service. Also, within the past month, the Tax Division has opened an on-line employer registration system, making it easier for employers to register with DOL. Most new employers will receive their registration number and their unemployment tax rate for the year immediately after answering a brief questionnaire. Finally, DOL is adding an application, targeted for implementation for the third quarter of 2006, which allows for automatic calculation of excess wages. The agency says this enhancement is in direct response to the comments provided by employers that have used the internet system and have completed an on-line survey.
