CBIA launches campaign: ‘Manufacturing is vital to Connecticut’s future’

Effort aims to help state manufacturers compete globally

CBIA has launched a major campaign to spread awareness of manufacturing’s key role in our economy in order to persuade government officials to create a more competitive manufacturing climate.

Many people (including some in government) have mistaken notions about manufacturing. For example, they fail to realize how high-tech today’s manufacturers are, or just how dependent many service businesses are on a healthy manufacturing sector. These misconceptions sometimes lead to problems that undermine Connecticut manufacturing — problems such as too few young young people entering manufacturing careers, or laws and regulations that increase manufacturers’ business costs.

With Connecticut manufacturers facing unprecedented competition from companies around the globe, it’s crucial that our state and federal governments create a business environment that nurtures this industry.

For that reason, CBIA’s board of directors recently made it a priority for the association to mount a manufacturing campaign whose goals are to (1) create a business climate in which Connecticut manufacturers can successfully compete and grow in the global economy; (2) promote the image of manufacturing as a vital component of our state’s economy and a source of rewarding career opportunities; and (3) help small and midsize manufacturers develop new domestic and international customers.

Throughout the campaign, CBIA will advocate that the government enforce international trade agreements, currency valuation requirements and intellectual property rights without retreating from the global marketplace and the exporting opportunities it provides. The association will work closely with national, state and regional organizations to address these issues and promote the importance of manufacturing.

The campaign’s major activities will include:

  • manufacturing-specific recommendations in CBIA’s 2004 Government Affairs Program, the association’s “action plan” for Connecticut’s General Assembly and regulatory agencies;
  • print and electronic publications, including a monthly manufacturing e-newsletter and a manufacturing area on CBIA’s Web site, cbia.com;
  • public outreach via the news media, including the “CBIA Business Minute” radio program.
  • billboards along major state highways;
  • outreach to let CBIA’s manufacturing members know about association services available to help them; and
  • collaboration with the National Association of Manufacturers on its national campaign.
