September 2004 — Vol. 82, No. 7 Jobs are top priority, says Governor RellEconomy still fragile, she notes
“Expanding our economy to create jobs for the people of this state is a top priority of my administration,” said Gov. M. Jodi Rell following a meeting with state economists July 27. The governor and the economists discussed the state’s employment outlook and the underlying strengths and weaknesses of Connecticut’s economy. “Our economy is still fragile,” Gov. Rell said, adding that “I will work in the coming weeks and months to make Connecticut a national leader in economic growth and job creation. “While our unemployment rate is lower than the national average, we are still seeing job reductions in our state,” the governor said. “When we lose one job, we’ve lost one job too many.” The governor noted that the state lost 4,200 jobs in June and that in recent weeks there have been announcements of additional significant job reductions at several state companies. “In order to keep and create jobs for the people of Connecticut, we need to focus on our state’s strengths,” the governor said. “We have the best-educated and most-productive workforce in the nation, and the quality of life here is second to none. “In addition,” Gov. Rell said, “we need to maintain an attractive business climate by holding down taxes and making certain the regulatory climate is positive.”
