SMALL BUSINESS

Consider a blogging policy

According to Shawn Kee, an attorney with the national workplace law firm Jackson Lewis in Stamford, many employers now have written company policies that cover the use of the Internet, e-mail and blogging. While blogging is not a constitutionally protected right of free speech, it may be granted some protection under whistleblower, antidiscrimination and other laws. Keeping that in mind and with the advice of an attorney, you may want to create a blogging policy that covers the basics, such as these:

  • Company equipment, including computers, is for business use only.

  • Employees must abide by nondisclosure and confidentiality parameters.

  • Discriminatory, libelous and other negative comments are prohibited.

  • Bloggers must comply with other company policies such as sexual harassment guidelines.

  • The company may take disciplinary action against employees who violate the company blogging policy.
