Spotlight on Connecticut elections an opportunity for business community

The extensive national media attention on Connecticut’s U.S. Senate race and a few of its congressional races will probably get a lot of people to the polls on Election Day, just as it did for the Democratic primaries in August. That presents both a challenge and an opportunity for all of us who are working to make Connecticut a more competitive business location.

With the media so focused on national and international issues, it’s harder to find good information in the press about the races for governor, the General Assembly and other state offices. On the other hand, the fact that so many voters are interested in the elections gives us a chance to remind voters — including you and your employees — to think about the state races too.

It’s the people we elect as governor and state legislators who have the biggest impact on whether companies like yours can continue to operate competitively and provide good jobs in this state.

To fill the void in the mainstream news media about the state races, we have created several ways for you and your employees to learn about the state candidates. This issue of CBIA News features the major-party gubernatorial candidates’ answers to questions on how they would make Connecticut more competitive.

We also urge you and your employees to visit our elections Web site, CTbizVotes.com, for detailed information about the General Assembly candidates and the business issues they will have to address if elected.

Our state’s current elected officials made progress earlier this year by reducing some business taxes, investing in transportation upgrades, and improving several education and workforce development programs. But much more still needs to be done. By becoming informed voters, you and your employees can help ensure we elect people who will do what’s needed to make Connecticut’s economy globally competitive.
