SMALL BUSINESS

Free online security tool kits for small businesses

The Council of Better Business Bureaus has a free, downloadable program giving small businesses information on developing a security and privacy plan. Entitled “Security & Privacy — Made Simpler,” it clarifies cyber-security issues and provides a nontechnical “road map” to follow in securing sensitive customer data. The program materials include easy-to-read security and privacy tool kits.

According to the BBB, a recent Small Business Technology Institute survey found that nearly 70% of small businesses consider information security a high priority, and more than 80% are confident in their existing protective measures. However, 56% experienced one or more security incidents in the past year, leaving perception at odds with reality. The survey also found that nearly 75% of small businesses do not have an information security plan, almost one-fifth do not use virus scanning for e-mail, and more than 60% do not protect their wireless networks with even the simplest form of encryption.
