Wanted: Businesses to lend material-handling equipment after a disaster

State and municipal emergency management directors in Connecticut are trying to identify businesses willing to lend forklifts and other material-handling equipment in the event of a disaster.

The equipment would be used at a local drive-through distribution site where disaster victims would receive emergency supplies. Volunteers would unload food, water and ice from trucks, most likely between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. The next day, victims would drive up, open their trunks and be given the supplies, according to Paul Gibb, emergency management program supervisor for the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS).

Besides forklifts, other types of equipment that might be needed include pallet jacks, Dumpsters, lighting sets, portable toilets, and so on.

“Connecticut has many small communities that don’t have this kind of equipment. If they can identify businesses that might donate the use of their equipment, they’ll be that much ahead of the game,” says Gibb.

If your company might be willing to lend equipment, contact your local emergency management director.
