Connecticut leads Northeast
in number and cost of health care mandates
Government-mandated health benefit coverage is a significant driver of health care costs. Yet more than a dozen new or expanded health coverage mandates have been proposed at the legislature.
CBIA is urging lawmakers to enact a moratorium on new mandated benefits.
The Council on Affordable Health Insurance ranks the state fourth-highest, behind only Minnesota, Maryland and Virginia, in the number of health insurance mandates.
Connecticut leads all Northeast states for the overall number of mandates as well as for their impact on health insurance premiums. Accord-ing to the council, government-mandated benefits significantly increase the cost of basic health coverage. In Connecticut, mandated benefits are estimated to increase costs by as much as 65%.
