CBIA introduces Management Institute for small, midsize companies
By Marah Block
CBIA writer
Many companies have talented, up-and-coming managers whose motivation and experience will set them on a path to greater responsibility. But even the most talented managers need education and training in order to succeed in higher-level positions. How can small and midsize companies help their managers develop
well-rounded skill sets and leadership abilities?
Through the CBIA Management Institute. This new five-part series of courses will assist in the leadership and business development of managers and human resources professionals. Areas of study will include business strategy, finance, marketing, communication skills and managerial development.
“It’s often a challenge for a small or midsize company to find the time or resources for formal degree programs that will prepare people for advancement,” says Phillip Montgomery, CBIA’s director of compensation services. “Consequently, employees don’t always get the preparation they need to take on greater responsibilities.”
As an additional benefit for human resources professionals, the CBIA Management Institute has been approved for 30 hours of Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) credits by the Human Resources Certification Institute.
The 2008 curriculum covers:
- Financial management (Jan. 18) — Participants will learn about financial theory as the foundation for making good managerial decisions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the monetary valuation of current and future assets and strategic and tactical issues pertaining to cash flow.
- Communication (Feb. 8) — The curriculum will address how to generate support for your action agenda without alienating others within the organization. Participants will master the ability to plug into another individual’s style and interest, and learn the differences between one-on-one persuasion and public discourse.
- Marketing strategies (March 20 and April 11) — Attendees will analyze the needs of the market and what motivated customers to make a buying decision. The curriculum will address qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques that analyze competitors, anticipate their actions, and support the company’s marketing decisions.
- Strategic decision making (May 9) — This session will explore methods and creative techniques that can facilitate objective and effective decision making. Participants will learn how to gather information, determine when there are sufficient resources and information to support a decision, gauge risks and uncertainties, and gain an understanding of analytical methods that can be used in decision making.
