Proposed high school graduation requirements

 

The State Board of Education’s high school reform proposal calls for the following requirements, effective for the graduating class of 2015:

  • 24 credits (up from 20)
  • A core curriculum of required courses:
    – 3 math: Algebra I and II, geometry
    – 3 science: biology plus chemistry or two other physical or life sciences
    – 4 English
    – 3 history/social science
    – 2 world language
    – 2 career and technical education and the arts
    – 2 health and wellness
    – 4 electives
  • 1 senior demonstration project
  • State-developed model curricula incorporating 21st-century learning skills
  • End-of-course written and performance assessments; no single exit exam
  • Exposure to career pathways and postsecondary and industry entry-level requirements
