CCEF goals include better environment, economic development

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, created by the legislature in 2000, has a mission of “promoting, developing and investing in clean energy sources for sustainable energy for the benefit of Connecticut ratepayers.” Financed by a charge on ratepayers’ electric bills, CCEF provides programs and educational activities for businesses, residents and communities. Its goals are to:

  1. Encourage installation of renewable energy systems in Connecticut. CCEF has approved 89 proposals so far.
  2. Establish a viable renewable energy industry in the state and thereby create jobs. “We had only one or two installers in the state a few years ago, and now there are 30 on the list of commercial installers,” says CCEF President Lise Dondy.
  3. Encourage individuals to ultimately reduce their dependence on CCEF incentives.

Encouraging the use of clean energy obviously benefits the environment. But by helping companies control their energy costs, CCEF’s incentives also help recipient companies become more competitive. For example, Leighton Lee IV, of The Lee Co., says their new solar PV system has made the company “better positioned than ever to continue investing and growing right here in Connecticut. The installation of the 308-kilowatt system will play a critical role in [our] plans for new facilities and jobs in the area.”
