Company Visits - The
Role of the Employer Sponsor
When setting up your company visit, you can help your corporate sponsor
prepare for the program. Here's how. Prior to the visit, it would be helpful to have the following available:
An Information Kit – to be shared with the teachers. Please
include as many of the following items as possible:
- Overview and history of your organization
- Annual report or other
industry-related information
- Organizational chart for the company
the teachers will be visiting
- Workflow charts showing the
connection between the designated department and other company
departments
- Communications materials such as company newsletter,
brochures, press releases
- Who is your competition? (a brief description)
- Who are your customers?
(a brief description)
- If possible, information about the individual
sponsors to let the educators know how they obtained the careers
they
are in.
- A list of the challenges your company is facing in the next
5, 10, 15 years.
- Information on the skills you are looking for in new hires.
An Agenda
- A company visit
can last approximately half a business day. Ideally, it would
be preferable to have an overview of the company and the chosen
area
of interest given by either human resources or a public affairs
professional, and from a manager in the area of interest.
- Following
the overview, we suggest the educators be given a tour of the
facility.
- Once completed, the individual teachers could be either
paired with individual professionals for information interviews,
or they
could rotate throughout different areas, gaining a perspective
on how certain jobs fit into the operations of your organization.
It would be helpful if the educators
could actually participate in some of the work being done, but this would be
determined according
to your time specifications and the level of technological expertise
of the educator.
- The educators would then reconvene in a central
area to process the experience, where ideally a corporate human resources representative
or a
manager from the area of interest would be on hand to answer
any questions.
Following the visit:
- In some instances, teachers can gain CEU credit for their
visit. If that's the case, the educators will ask that you sign
a form verifying their visit. You might
also want to ask them to complete a survey based
on their experience. The feedback may be useful should you decide
to continue school-to-career
activities with your local schools
Please know that these are simply suggestions based on previous
experiences You can be as creative and flexible as you want when
creating a program. The idea is for you and the educator to gain
from the experience.
