School Improvement Preparing Students for Careers Education in the Workplace Employer Involvement

Welcome to CBIA Education Foundation's
No Child Left Behind Web site

The CBIA Education Foundation has spent the past two decades working with Connecticut schools and the business community to create programs that enable tomorrow’s leaders to be better prepared for entering the workforce. Our past accomplishments include Math Connections and School-to-Career programs that prepare Connecticut students for careers in various areas of interest. We have also partnered with local companies to introduce educators to the ever-changing world of work. Through our innovative teacher externship programs we have shown educators from across the state the opportunities that await their students.

In January 2002, President Bush and Congress finalized reforms of federal education programs. The No Child Left Behind Act 2002 (NCLB) amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to revise, reauthorize and consolidate various programs. The overall goal of NCLB is to have all students proficient by 2014. NCLB differs from past initiatives in two important ways. First, it represents a more systemic approach to achieving reform and improvement, tying together a variety of requirements and incentives in areas ranging from student testing, school safety and reading instruction, to professional development for teachers and technical assistance for low-performing schools. Second, it significantly raises the stakes – for states, districts and schools – for failure to make steady, demonstrable progress toward improving student achievement.

NCLB has: increased accountability for states, school districts, and schools; greater choice for parents and students, particularly those attending low-performing schools; more flexibility for states and local educational agencies (LEA’s) in the use of Federal education dollars; and a stronger emphasis on reading as its pillars. While we know there are many challenges in front of educators trying to implement the many provisions of the law, it is the law. And CBIA believes it is important to try to identify resources in the community that can assist schools in meeting these challenges.

The passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 (NCLB) is putting a lot of demands on the communities to help improve students' academic performances in schools. The CBIA Education Foundation would like to help educators tap into the resources that businesses and their employee volunteers can provide. We believe it is important to create a bridge for local businesses and schools to interact with each other for the betterment of students across the state. We hope this Web site provides an easy portal for you to find the information you need to help create long-standing relationships with your area schools and the community.
