Transportation

(Jan. 9, 2008) Connecticut faces enormous transportation challenges, including growing congestion, road and bridge maintenance demands, and the need to transform our infrastructure so it can support a 21st century economy.

Recommendations

  • Improve the DOT's ability to plan and execute high-priority transportation improvements by:
    • Implementing best management practices for identifying needs and recruiting the most qualified candidates to fill critical vacancies within the DOT.
    • Implementing best management practices used in the most successful state departments of transportation to improve the organizational performance of the DOT.
  • Continue to focus the state's limited transportation resources on the highest-priority transportation challenges and opportunities, including congestion relief on the I-95 corridor in southwestern Connecticut.
  • Expand efforts to increase the impact of Bradley International Airport as an economic driver by:
    • Developing and managing the airport in ways that allow it to compete with privately operated airports and earn local and international recognition for delivering an exceptional travel experience to its customers.
    • Revising the airport's management structure and hiring an executive director who will report directly to the airport's board of directors.
    • Implementing best management practices for recruiting the most qualified candidates to fill critical airport vacancies.
