At halfway mark:

Transportation

(April 4, 2008) After policymakers invested more than $3 billion in transportation improvements over the past three years, the business community is encouraged that they are turning their attention to reforming the operations of the state Department of Transportation (DOT). They’re specifically focusing on the DOT’s ability to identify, plan and execute transportation priorities.

A report to the legislature from the Governor’s Commission on the Reform of the DOT provided a comprehensive set of recommendations on how to make the DOT a more efficient and effective agency. And Gov. Rell announced an initiative to split the DOT into two agencies and institute “a culture of change, opportunity and reform at DOT.”

Businesses supported the work of the governor’s commission and continue to push for the recommendations to be implemented at both the legislative and administrative levels. Positive proposals continue to advance and are related to the commission’s recommendations.

These would implement two of the commission’s recommendations by creating the positions of chief operating officer and a director of strategic planning and evaluation.
