Lawmakers to take up energy proposal
(June 1, 2007) As this Report was being published, state legislators were expected to take up a compromise energy package to address Connecticut’s energy challenges.
It is believed the proposal will:
• Include a comprehensive long-term energy plan for the state that will focus on reducing costs
• Help Connecticut consumers become more efficient and better informed energy users
• Restore funding for energy conservation programs
• Reform the state’s energy procurement process
• Provide more options to increase generating capacity.
In addition, the plan is expected to include a way to implement the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) in Connecticut – presumably without triggering additional significant price increases in energy costs.
RGGI is an effort to limit the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from power-generating units in the Northeast. Generating facilities whose current emissions do not meet the cap requirements must either reduce their energy production or obtain “CO2 allowances” to make up the difference.
As details of the package become available, CBIA will report on them on its Web site, cbia.com. For more information, contact CBIA’s Bonnie Stewart at 860-244-1925 or stewartb@cbia.com.
