Anti-sourcing bill fails

(June 7, 2007) An effort to penalize Connecticut companies for participating in the global economy died when no action was taken on it as time ran out in the regular session.

HB-7032 discouraged companies that do business with the state from sourcing some of their work in locations that will enable the businesses to be more competitive and effective.

Although it was not an outright ban on outsourcing under state contracts, the bill still would have sent the harmful and pointed message that Connecticut is unfriendly to the global economy.

With the state trying to improve its economic development and job-creation efforts, the bill’s timing and aim were both poor. Protectionist measures neither help employees in the state nor help retain or create jobs.
