(June 11, 2008) Earlier this year, the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) began accepting online submissions of informational withholding returns from taxpayers and preparers. Based on feedback, the agency is now enhancing this program in an effort to improve the process and prepare for the tax year 2008 informational return filing.
As part of this effort, and by June 30, the DRS will begin posting draft information about filing requirements and record layout specifications on its Web site at www.ct.gov/electronicfileW2and1099.
In 2009, taxpayers or preparers that file 25 or more 2008 Forms W-2, Forms W-2G, Forms 1099-R and Forms 1099-MISC must transmit informational returns through the DRS electronic Taxpayer Service Center (TSC). The agency no longer accepts informational returns on magnetic media, including cartridges, cassettes, or CDs. Failure to comply with the electronic filing mandate may subject the filer to a non-compliance penalty.
The three electronic filing options offered through the TSC are:
- Key-and-Send. Manually enter up to 50 informational returns.
- Dynamic Web Import (DWI). Dynamically define and upload a file containing informational returns.
- Batch File Upload. Upload a file using the standard file layout supported by most payroll software applications.
Throughout the upcoming months more detailed information about this electronic filing process will be added to the DRS Web site. Please visit the Web page at www.ct.gov/electronicfileW2and1099.
