DHS issues PPE standards for first responders

The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Division has issued its first standards regarding personal protective equipment developed to protect first responders against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents. The standards will assist state and local officials making procurement decisions related to first responder equipment and will also provide manufacturers with performance standards and test methods.

The guidelines were developed in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). They incorporate three NIOSH standards for respiratory protection equipment and five NFPA standards for protective suits and clothing. To access a copy of the guidelines, click here.
