New info on hazards related to striking underground gas lines

OSHA has issued new advice for contractors on ways to avoid the hazards associated with striking underground gas lines during excavation work. The new bulletin details an incident from 1998 where a cable construction company installation crew in Minnesota struck and ruptured an underground gas pipeline, resulting in a natural gas leak; after the rupture an explosion occurred, causing four fatalities and several other injuries. The bulletin also addresses an employer’s duty to establish a detailed work plan and train employees on proper procedures for determining the locations of underground utilities, and recommends contacting pipeline operators immediately if excavation work damages a pipeline.
