Definition of Dependent Eligibility
for CBIA Medical and Dental Plans

Beginning January 1, 2009, a new Connecticut law allows parents to cover certain unmarried dependents up to age 26, under a parent's individual or group health insurance plan. Dependents must meet the following criteria to be enrolled and to qualify for the new age limit.

  • Any natural, adopted or stepchild, for whom the member or spouse is the legal guardian
  • Dependent must reside in Connecticut (unless a full-time student)
  • Dependent must be unmarried
  • Dependent must not be covered under their employer’s group insurance plan

What this means:

  • Dependents will remain eligible for coverage until age 26*.
  • The carrier may request verification of dependent residency and/or full-time student status at any time.
  • The information furnished on the enrollment form will be used to verify dependent eligibility.
  • Coverage will terminate prior to age 26 if the child marries, becomes covered under their own group health plan or moves out of state (unless a full time student).
  • Disabled dependents will remain eligible for continued coverage beyond age 26 if approved by the health plan.

*Actual termination under new mandate will occur on the first of the month following 30 days from the dependent’s 26th birthday.
Example: A dependent who turns 26 on Feb. 15th will be terminated on April 1.
