FORMER SUPERINTENDENT OF ROCKY HILL SCHOOLS LEADS CBIA EDUCATION INITIATIVE ‘PROJECT OPENING DOORS'
Will help improve student performance in Connecticut schools
The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) has named Joseph Andrew Camille (Cam) Vautour to head the CBIA Education Foundation's “Project Opening Doors.” The initiative, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Education, focuses on preparing students to excel in math, science and English and encourages them to explore science- and technology-based careers. The project is part of a six-year, $13.2 million grant from the National Math and Science Initiative to help fund training and incentive programs for Advanced Placement (AP) and pre-AP courses and exams.
"We are very pleased to have Cam lead this project,” said Lauren Weisberg Kaufman, CBIA vice president of education and job training and executive director of the CBIA Education Foundation. “Cam's experience, knowledge of Connecticut 's education system and dedication to educational excellence are critical to his goal of helping schools achieve a higher standard.”
Vautour, who spent the last 14 years as superintendent of Rocky Hill Public Schools, has a career spanning almost four decades in Connecticut 's public education system. He began his career as a special education teacher and has worked in Tolland, South Windsor, Hebron, Andover, Marlborough and Rocky Hill.
A primary focus of his job is to recruit content specialists in the areas of science, math and language arts to serve as master teachers who can train educators throughout the state on AP instruction and increase schools' participation in AP programs. He will also identify students capable of higher-level classes and will work to help close the achievement gap for Hispanic and African-American children.
Vautour earned his J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law, his Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of Connecticut, and his B.A. from Fitchburg State College. He has won numerous awards including “Education Leader of the Year” and “Administrator of the Year.”
He is a member of many organizations, including the American Association of School Administrators, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Connecticut Bar Association. He is a past member of the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents and the Hartford Area Superintendents' Association.
Vautour lives in Hartford and has two adult sons.
