THE FAMILY BUSINESS CONFERENCE
Unique challenges facing today's family businesses to be addressed
Keynote presentation by Stew Leonard Jr.

Thurs., Jan. 24, 2008
8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Crowne Plaza Hotel, Cromwell

Connecticut 's family businesses face most of the same issues confronting the largest companies operating in the state, yet they also have unique challenges. The high cost of doing business and rising health care costs remain their most significant concerns, but family businesses also deal with succession planning and the kinds of struggles typically found in family structures.

Family business owners have to successfully manage both business operations and family interests. One well-known family business in Connecticut has done just that, creating the world's largest dairy store, employing more than 2,000 workers in four locations, and earning $300 million in sales. Stew Leonard Jr., president and CEO of Stew Leonard's, will be the keynote speaker at the conference. He will discuss the challenges of running a family-owned business and how the company's values and management philosophy have helped them succeed. Stew Leonard's has been recognized in Fortune Magazine's “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” for the past six years.

The Family Business Conference will feature panel discussions on several topics, including:

  • Preserving the legacy with succession planning

  • Financial planning

  • Estate tax laws

  • Beyond succession

The conference is presented by CBIA and the University of Connecticut Family Business Program . The event is sponsored by Webster Bank, Reid and Riege P.C., and Kostin, Ruffkess & Co. LLC.

The cost for the conference is $75 for CBIA and UConn Family Business Program members and $125 for nonmembers.
