HOUSING AND DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS COULD ENDANGER CONNECTICUT 'S ECONOMY

Connecticut is a desirable place to live and work, but current and troubling demographic trends could impact the state's economic future. What must Connecticut do to save the state's economy and avoid a perilous population decline and job/business exodus? Business and economic leaders from the area will examine the issue at The Housing, Population Trends and the Future of Connecticut Conference.

Friday, Feb. 15, 2008
8:30- 11:30 a.m.
The Lyceum Resource and Conference Center
27 Lawrence Street

Hartford, CT
(Directions: www.lyceumcenter.org)

The keynote speaker is Peter Francese, founder of American Demographics Magazine, and principal demographer, New England Economic Project. Francese will discuss Connecticut 's dangerous, first-in-the-nation distinction of losing the highest percentage of 25 to 34 year-olds since 1990 than any other state.

A panel of area business experts will discuss whether the high cost of living in Connecticut is affecting the workforce and if increasing affordable housing will help attract and keep new jobs and workers to the state. Panelists include:

  • Robert Santy, president and CEO, Connecticut Economic Resource Center Inc.

  • Pamela Trotman Reid, president, St. Joseph 's College

  • Kevin Kinsella, vice president, Hartford Hospital

  • Norman Krayem, immediate past president, Connecticut Association of Realtors

The panel will be moderated by Hartford Courant Columnist Rick Green.

The conference is sponsored by The Partnership for Strong Communities, the Connecticut Business & Industry Association, the Connecticut Association of Realtors, Konover Development Corp., Connecticut Economic Resource Center Inc., Fairfield University, Home Builders Association of Connecticut, the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority.
