2008 Survey of Availability of Skilled Workers in Connecticut will be released
The growth of Connecticut businesses depends on a highly skilled workforce. But companies are struggling in their efforts to find skilled workers. Business leaders and a panel of experts will highlight the critical need for employers, educators and policymakers to work together to ensure that Connecticut's future workers have the skills needed to be successful in the global economy at the Connecticut's Challenge: Building a 21st – Century Skilled Workforce conference.

The conference will feature Mark McQuillan, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Education and Patricia Mayfield, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Labor. Commissioner McQuillan will discuss practices that can help close the achievement gap and reverse the “brain drain” in Connecticut. Commissioner Mayfield will examine workforce challenges and the use of nontraditional employment pools being used to meet the needs of today's companies.
Peter Gioia, CBIA vice president and economist and Lauren Kaufman, CBIA vice president of education and job training, will release and discuss the findings of the 2008 Availability of Skilled Workers in Connecticut Survey. The survey focuses on the latest workforce developments including demographic challenges, the economic impact of labor shortages and educational and training needs.
The conference is presented by the Connecticut Business & Industry Association, The United Illuminating Co., Capital Workforce Partners, and the Connecticut Community Colleges College of Technology Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing.
