THOUSANDS OF CONNECTICUT STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT MANUFACTURING CAREERS AT THREE-DAY EVENT IN HARTFORD

Manufacture Your Future: Careers Expo II
June 3 - 5, 2008
8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Connecticut Expo Center
265 Reverend Moody Overpass
Hartford

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA), the Connecticut Community College's College of Technology Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing and dozens of manufacturing companies from across the state are hosting Manufacture Your Future: Careers Expo II,” a three-day event to increase student awareness of opportunities in manufacturing and help them consider rewarding, high-paying careers in the industry.

More than 3,300 middle and high school students from across the state will visit the Connecticut Expo Center, which will be transformed into a simulated manufacturing company. Actual manufacturing processes will be demonstrated to show how products are made, and there will be exhibits of a wide range of Connecticut-made products along with student demonstrations. The students will participate in a virtual manufacturing process to help them understand the connection between what they learn in school and the job skills they will need in the future.

The actual machinery used in design and production will be on display and running, helping students see how raw materials become finished products. They will see firsthand the machinery and processes used to produce a key chain, including:

  • CNC machining
  • CAD/CAM
  • Eyelets and stamping
  • Plating and coil slitting
  • Laser technology
  • Plastic injection molding

In addition, the expo will feature:

  • Student displays and demonstrations
    • Robots built by winners of the FIRST Robotics Competition
    • Projects created by machining students
  • Exhibits of Connecticut-made products, including a space suit, model submarines and rockets
  • Virtual reality welding experience
  • Environmental aerospace and medical products that preserve and enhance lives
  • Educational institution representatives giving students information on how they can best prepare for a career in manufacturing
  • A flight simulator

On Wednesday, June 4, science, math, engineering technology and manufacturing teachers can attend free faculty workshops to learn how innovative technology can transform classroom teaching and help students develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

Workshops include:

  • Employability Skills – 8:45 – 9:15 a.m.
  • Rapid Prototyping - 9:20 – 11:20 a.m.
  • Gender Equity in Engineering and Technology Education – 11:25 – 11:45 a.m.

On Thursday, June 5, the student finalists in the Connecticut Technical High School Yankee Ingenuity Challenge will have their exhibits judged and a winner will be announced.
