CBIA HELPS BUSINESSES PREPARE

With flu season quickly approaching, businesses must be prepared for the potential of employee absences widespread enough to threaten operations. The Connecticut Business & Industry Association is helping businesses prepare for issues related to the H1N1 flu at its conference “Your Business Continuity Plan and the Pandemic Flu: The Same Thing, or Two Distant Planets?”

Wed., Oct. 7, 2009
8:30 – 11:30 a.m.
CBIA
350 Church Street, Hartford

Beyond counseling employees on how to wash their hands and cough into their sleeves, the conference will identify specific strategies to help businesses stay operational in the face of serious disruptions caused by pandemic flu.

Homeland security, organizational safety and security expert Bo Mitchell, president of 911 consulting, will discuss why now is the time to reevaluate planning and staffing needs and determine how to respond to a crisis. Mitchell, who was recently interviewed on the CBIA Business Minute, will discuss the importance of having both pandemic flu and business continuity plans. Other topics include:

  • OSHA’s involvement with thepandemic flu
  • Why your corporate attorney is important to pandemic flu planning
  • Why your crisis media planning is critical to pandemic flu planning
  • What could happen if you don’t have a pandemic flu plan

Employment law attorney Chuck Stohler, partner at Carmody & Torrance, will discuss human resource policies surrounding pandemic flu planning. He will focus on what businesses need to know if faced with staffing and operation disruptions due to the flu, including:

  • Leave policies (including family and medical leave)
  • Sending workers home
  • Refusal to work and work restrictions
  • Pay policies
  • Working at home and social distancing
  • Liability and privacy issues
  • Accommodation
  • Essential workers
