CONNECTICUT COMMUNITY COLLEGES OFFERING PROGRAMS ON LEAN MANUFACTURING

CBIA program helping train manufacturing workers to improve business practices and become more competitive

Manufacturing employees from across the state are participating in a new certificate program in lean manufacturing offered at three Connecticut community colleges. Naugatuck, Northwestern Connecticut and Manchester joined five other community colleges in the state, offering the two-course certificate training program in lean manufacturing. The courses help employees improve their manufacturing processes and reduce waste so that they can be more competitive in today’s global marketplace.

“These courses offer employees skills necessary to sustain and implement continuous improvement efforts that will benefit their employers’ bottom line and help position them for future growth and success,” said Judith K. Resnick, director of workforce development and training, Connecticut Business & Industry Association.

Twenty-five participants from three area manufacturing companies participated in the program at Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC).  They completed the first course in March and received their certificates by completing the second course on June 11. The businesses participating in the program at NCCC are:

  • Sterling Engineering, Winsted
  • Alcoa Howmet, Winsted
  • Winsted Precision Ball Co., Winsted

At Manchester Community College (MCC), 25 participants from seven manufacturing companies completed the first class in April and will receive their certificate when they have completed the second course on June 24. Companies participating in the program at MCC are:

  • Stanadyne Corp.,Windsor
  • ABA-PGT Inc., Manchester
  • Flanagan Industries, Glastonbury
  • Timken Aerospace, Manchester
  • Advanced Mold & Manufacturing, Manchester
  • Aerogear, Windsor
  • Ripley Tool, Cromwell

Twenty-six participants from six local businesses participated in the program at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC). They completed the first course in late March and will complete the second course on June 30, when they will receive their certificates. The businesses participating in the program at NVCC are:

  • Lacey Manufacturing, Bridgeport
  • H & T Waterbury, Waterbury
  • Summit Corp., Thomaston
  • Belimo, Danbury

The program was made possible by a U.S. Department of Labor High Growth Job Training Grant in Advanced Manufacturing awarded to the Connecticut Business & Industry Association and the Connecticut Community Colleges and managed by Quinebaug Valley Community College. These courses are taught by CONNSTEP, the manufacturing extension program serving Connecticut.

CBIA’s Education Foundation will offer this certificate program to other interested companies for their incumbent workers at several of the state’s community colleges in the fall. Seven of the state’s 12 community colleges are participating in the program: Naugatuck, Northwestern, Manchester, Quinebaug Valley, Gateway, Tunxis and Asnuntuck. CBIA is the state’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members.
