Connecticut is still in the grips of one of the worst economic downturns in recent history, but there are some subtle signs of improvement.  When the economy begins to recover, businesses need to be ready to take the necessary steps to strengthen and grow their businesses again.

At CBIA's conference “The Connecticut Economy,” held at the Rocky Hill Marriott on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, top business leaders and economic experts will discuss when the economic recovery will begin, how robust it will be, what sectors show the most promise, and how businesses should prepare themselves.

The keynote speakers are Drew Matus, senior director, U.S. economics, Merrill Lynch, and Rae Rosen, assistant vice president, Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Matus will discuss the recovery of the nation’s financial markets and their future. Rosen will focus on the state of the economy, particularly how recovery will affect Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.

The conference will also feature a panel of CEOs who will discuss the impact of the recession and recovery on Connecticut and their businesses. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Susan Coleman, Ansley Chair of Finance, Barney School of Business, University of Hartford, and will include:

  • Samuel S. Bergami Jr., CEO, Alinabal Inc.
  • S. Douglas Devnew, vice president, TRUMPF Inc.
  • Dr. Michael F. Foley, president and CEO, Reflexite Corp.
  • Michael Herbert, president and CEO, ConnectiCare Inc.

A news conference will be held at 10 a.m. to announce the results of the CBIA/BlumShapiro 2009 Survey of Connecticut Businesses. This annual survey identifies trends and issues facing Connecticut businesses and can help state policymakers identify ways to improve the state’s economic climate. Complete survey results will be distributed at the news conference.

The conference is sponsored by CBIA, the Hartford Area Business Economists (HABE), the University of Hartford, BlumShapiro, CL&P/Yankee Gas, Comcast, Merrill Lynch and Bank of America. The cost for the conference is $75 for CBIA and HABE members and $100 for nonmembers.
