CBIA HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR HIGH-DEMAND JOBS IN ENERGY AND GREEN TECHNOLOGY
Releases DVD and teacher’s guide exploring careers
Some of Connecticut's fastest-growing industries offer many of the most rewarding careers, including positions in health and biosciences, engineering, energy, and green technology, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2008 Career Guide to Industries.
To help prepare Connecticut students for careers in these growing fields, the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) Education Foundation has released Career Pathways: Energy and Green Technology. The newest kit, the fourth in a series, contains a DVD, classroom poster, and 20-page teacher’s guide with exercises exploring jobs, expanding students’ knowledge of educational requirements and career opportunities, and illustrating how these careers transform and enrich the way we live. Designed to be used in middle schools and high schools, and aligned with Connecticut state standards, the guide provides information on traditional and alternative energy and green technology careers and salary ranges.
"Our employers need a highly skilled workforce in order to remain competitive,” says Judith K. Resnick, executive director of CBIA’s Education Foundation. “The guide and DVD can play a pivotal role in helping students see potential career paths and understand what skills and/or education are needed to pursue high-paying, high-demand jobs available throughout the state.”
The DVD gives students an overview of the energy and green technology sector and contains short day-in-the-life profiles of young men and women working in a variety of traditional and alternative energy jobs. These include a transmission planning engineer, fuel cell technician, environmental engineer, electrician, energy specialist, applications engineer, and HVAC technician. Also included is information about programs at Connecticut’s community colleges and four-year universities that can prepare students for energy careers.
Copies of Career Pathways: Energy and Green Technology DVD and Teacher’s Guide will be distributed to all of the state’s high schools and middle schools. The DVD is currently downloadable for free at www.cbia.com/edf/careerpathways.htm. Other Career Pathways kits include Engineering; Manufacturing; and Health & Biosciences.
The Career Pathways Energy and Green Technology DVD and teacher’s guide is produced by CBIA in partnership with the Connecticut Community Colleges SOAR Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor; the Connecticut Community College’s College of Technology Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing, which is funded by the National Science Foundation; Northeast Utilities; and the United Illuminating Co.
CBIA is the state’s largest business organization, with 10,000 member companies.
