What Connecticut Businesses Need to Know about Changing Labor and Employment Laws on the Federal, State and Judicial Levels
Numerous developments in the area of employment law over the past year will have long-lasting effects on employers in Connecticut and across the country. The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have teamed up for a Labor and Employment Conference to give Connecticut employers all the information they need about federal, state and judicial changes and how they will affect their companies.

Steven Law, chief legal officer and general counsel for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will provide an update on federal legislation. He will focus on:
The Employee Free Choice Act (also known as the union “Card Check Bill”)
The Family and Medical Leave Act
The Healthy Families Act
Civil rights, discrimination, and immigration issues
Kia Murrell, CBIA associate counsel and the Association's lead lobbyist on labor and workforce issues, will discuss legislative changes that affect every Connecticut business. She will give an update on minimum wage, tip credit, workers' compensation and unemployment compensation issues and discuss what issues are expected to take center stage in the 2009 legislative session.
Connecticut 's courts have seen a lot of changes this past year, and Patrick McHale, an employment and labor law attorney with Kainen, Escalera and McHale, will have a judicial update. He will discuss the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's determination bias against employers and recent case rulings on:
Discriminatory pay
Age and general discrimination
Retaliatory actions
Arbitration judgments
