Peter M. Gioia

Peter M. Gioia is vice president and economist for the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA), the state’s largest business organization with approximately 10,000 member companies.

Gioia manages CBIA’s research department, which provides in-depth economic and policy analyses, and survey research assistance to CBIA’s Legal, Insurance and Human Resources divisions and to member companies. The department also provides association members with international trade information.

He tracks Connecticut’s economy through the CBIA quarterly economic survey; the CBIA-Connecticut Association of Purchasing Management survey; and special purpose surveys on such topics as manufacturing, training needs, information technology, credit availability, small business, business expansion, international trade and education. Gioia also conducts the annual CBIA membership survey on public policy issues. Gioia publishes numerous white papers and special reports on topics such as transportation, myths and facts about the Connecticut economy and state spending. Gioia is a frequent contributor to the association’s Web site – cbia.com, the Connecticut Business Minute radio report, Government Affairs Report and CBIA News.

Gioia is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars. He is quoted over four hundred times a year in the media and is a frequent guest on media programs concerning business and political issues in the region. He manages several outlook conferences on the Connecticut and regional economies each year working with partners such as the Federal Reserve Bank, the Hartford Area Business Economists, the New England Economic Project and the MetroHartford Economic Alliance.
Prior to joining CBIA, Gioia was a senior consultant with KPMG Peat Marwick. He has also been a researcher for The Futures Group and the Criminal Justice Education Center.

Gioia was a budget analyst for the Connecticut General Assembly’s Office of Fiscal Analysis. Gioia’s responsibilities included public health and human service agencies. He has also worked with the Institute of Social Inquiry’s Connecticut Poll. Gioia joined CBIA in November 1989.

Gioia holds a master’s degree with distinction in public affairs from the University of Connecticut and a bachelor’s degree in history and economics from Hobart College. Gioia was Connecticut Team Captain for USA*NAFTA. He is a past president and member of the Hartford Area Business Economists, a member of the National Association of Business Economists, a board member of the New England Economic Project, and a board member of the MetroHartford Economic Growth Council.
