CUNO EMPLOYEES PROMOTED AFTER COMPLETING CBIA JOB TRAINING PROGRAM
Six employees at CUNO’s Enfield facility have been promoted after successfully completing a Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) manufacturing job training program.
The workers recently participated in the Train-the-Trainer certification program administered by the CBIA Education Foundation through grants from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The DOL grant helps train workers in manufacturing jobs where there are shortages of skilled labor. The NAM grant seeks to help workers keep jobs by improving their skills so they can advance within their careers and fill much-needed positions.
Thirty CUNO employees participated in the Train-the Trainer Program, which helped them learn how to provide on-the-job training to manufacturing floor employees. As a result of the program, six employees, Telma Delao of Manchester, Ngoc-Lang Nguyen of Enfield, Jose Rodriguez of Hartford, and Hector Marcano, Alina Khampadith, and Vanessa Nguyen, all of Springfield, Mass., were recently promoted from Assembler A’s to Senior Assemblers.
CUNO managers said one of their goals with this program was to improve the abilities of Assembler A’s so that they could be promoted to Senior Assemblers, a newly created position within the company. CUNO managers have also noticed improved levels of confidence among all the employees who participated in the training.
“A highly skilled workforce is essential if Connecticut’s businesses are to compete in today’s global marketplace. Training is key to maintaining a world-class workforce,” said Judith Resnick, CBIA’s director of workforce development and training. “The advancement of Telma, Ngoc-Lang, Jose, Hector, Alina and Vanessa, the first six people at CUNO to receive promotions as a result of the CBIA training classes, proves that these programs are necessary and effective.”
The U.S. DOL and NAM grants allow CBIA to focus on helping small and midsize manufacturers in the Greater Hartford region identify employee training needs for skill upgrading and job advancement. This training program helps the workers advance, which in turn benefits the company helping it remain competitive in the global marketplace.
CUNO, based in Meriden, employs over 1,800 people worldwide, including approximately 300 in its Enfield facility. CUNO is a world leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of a comprehensive line of filtration products for the separation, clarification and purification of fluids and gasses. Its proprietary products include uses in the health care, industrial and drinking water markets.
CBIA, the state’s largest business organization with 10,000 member companies throughout Connecticut, is also providing a customized English-as-a-second-language (ESL) training program for CUNO employees. Fourteen employees are participating in this class through a grant from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Hitachi Foundation. ###
