DIABETES WORKSHOP PUTS DIABETES PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT TO WORK
Businesses Hear How to Control Spiraling Healthcare Costs from Diabetes

Diabetes is common, serious and costly - but controllable. More than 17 million people in the United States have diabetes, and the number is increasing. Diabetes can affect people at all levels in the workforce any time and any place. The Connecticut Business and Industry Association (CBIA) and the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) have assembled leading health experts to discuss how businesses can promote healthy behaviors and provide employees with diabetes care, support and information.

Putting Diabetes Prevention and Management to Work
Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003
8 – 10 a.m.
The Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, Cromwell

Special guest speaker Steve Delaronde, M.P.H., M.S.W., of ConnectiCare Inc. & Affiliates will join representatives from the Connecticut Diabetes Prevention Control Program in a lively presentation on addressing diabetes in the workplace. “In Connecticut, an estimated 141,000 people have diabetes,” says Cindy Kozak, R.D., M.P.H., C.D.E., coordinator, Connecticut Department of Public Health. “And the number is increasing.”

In addition, workshop attendees will be introduced to www.diabetesatwork.org, a free, online tool developed by NDEP to help companies assess, plan and implement diabetes education programs.

“One of the pressing issues for companies today is the rising costs of health benefits,” says Phillip Montgomery, CBIA’s compensation and benefits manager. “Having faced double digit cost increases during the past few years, companies have found it imperative to find innovative ways to address this problem. This workshop promises to offer valuable information in helping companies address an illness that can have a direct impact on a company’s workforce health and the cost of its health plans.”

NDEP - a joint initiative of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health - teamed up with several organizations, including the Washington Business Group on Health, the American Association of Health Plans and the National Business Coalition on Health, to create the information and resources available on www.diabetesatwork.org.

CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members.
