CBIA’S ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES COUNCIL MEETING
“SMART GROWTH HAPPENS”

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) is sponsoring the 6th annual Environmental Policies Council (EPC) Fall Meeting, “Smart Growth Happens,” on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Georgetown, CT. The program focuses on how market forces, government policies and public/private partnerships are working to create innovative developments in Connecticut.

“Smart growth means being smart about growth in our state,” said CBIA President and CEO Kenneth Decko. “The meeting will focus on how incentive-based smart-growth principles, encourage needed economic growth and job creation, while helping to revitalize our cities, preserve open spaces and improve Connecticut’s quality of life.”

Topics include:

  • Keys to managing growth without limiting economic opportunities and market choices;

  • Federal, state and local efforts to encourage smart growth; and

  • What government can do to better foster similar development practices.

Speakers include:

  • Robert Varney, regional administrator, Environmental Protection Agency;

  • Jane Stahl, deputy commissioner, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection;

  • Peter Lent, Office of Business & Industry Development, Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development;

  • Sen. John Fonfara (D), Hartford;

  • Rep. Lew Wallace (D), Danbury;

  • Sen. Leonard Fasano (R), North Haven; and

  • Rep. Craig Miner (R), Litchfield.

The conference will conclude with a tour previewing the transition of a 150-year-old environmentally impaired mill into a model commercial, residential and retail community for Connecticut in the 21st century.

CBIA is the state’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members.
