THE FAIRFIELD COUNTY ECONOMY
The Decade Ahead

Rising health care costs, Connecticut’s transportation infrastructure and energy costs and reliability are major issues facing businesses across the state. Solutions to these problems are vital to the state’s success today and in the future, especially for businesses in Fairfield County.

To examine the challenges facing them, CBIA has teamed up with the Stamford, Greenwich and Greater Norwalk Chambers of Commerce, the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, The University of Connecticut CIBER, the Fairfield County Business Journal and the Westchester County Business Journal
to present “The Fairfield County Economy: The Decade Ahead,” at the Westin Hotel in Stamford on Dec. 2, 2004.

Experts including keynote speaker Christine Cumming, first vice president and COO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, She will discuss the strengths and challenges of the Fairfield County economy and where it’s heading in the next year and the next decade. Other speakers include:

  • Lynn Franco, director, Consumer Research Center, The Conference Board, and producer of the Consumer Confidence Index;
  • Edward Deak, Roger M. Lynch professor of economics, Fairfield University, and Connecticut forecast manager, New England Economic Partnership;
  • Maury Harris, managing director and chief economist for the Americas, UBS Investment Research; and
  • Charles “Chuck” Berg, CEO, Oxford Health Plans Inc.

In a special breakout session, "Electric Energy Issues and the Region," top industry leaders will discuss rising energy costs and the implications of the recent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission plan to split Connecticut into two energy pricing zones. Other panel discussions include:

  • The outlook for the finance, insurance and real estate industries;
  • Transportation issues: I-95 corridor;
  • International business issues; and
  • The importance of the health care industry to the region.

CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members.
