The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) elected Joseph Carlson III to a four-year term on its board of directors at its Oct. 27 Annual Meeting.

Carlson is president of G&R Manufacturing, in Naugatuck. He is one of 16 new members elected to the CBIA board who will begin their terms Dec. 1.

CBIA is the state’s largest business organization, with 10,000 member companies throughout Connecticut. The board of directors approves the organization’s plans, policies and strategies, and particularly focuses on ways to make Connecticut a better place to do business and create jobs.

Carlson purchased G&R Manufacturing in 1997 and became president. Since that time, he has increased sales and created 20 new jobs. From 1994-1997, he was general manager of Engineering Specialties in Branford. He also held several positions, including tool designer, production manager, plant manager and corporate team leader, at Mark Eyelet Inc., a subsidiary of Amp Inc., in Wolcott. Prior to that, he worked as a master diemaker and design engineer at Burndy Corp. in Milford and as a high-speed progressive diemaker at Ditron Inc. in Pawling, New York. He began his career in 1979 as an apprentice toolmaker at Truelove & Maclean in Waterbury.

Carlson is the chairman of the Naugatuck Chamber of Commerce; president of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls, and the Smaller Manufacturers Association of Connecticut; and vice chairman of the Naugatuck Economic Development Corp. and the Waterbury Regional Chamber. He is also a member of the CBIA Comp Services board of directors and the Governor’s Council on Economic Competitiveness Progressive Manufacturing Enterprise Board.

Carlson was born and raised in Naugatuck and attended local schools. After high school, he served an apprenticeship in the tool and die trade. He earned a manufacturing engineering degree from Waterbury State Technical College. He lives in Naugatuck with his wife and their five children.
