The Connecticut Business & Industry Association and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, along with a number of New Haven area businesses are holding a book drive to help New Haven students participating in the Connecticut State Scholars Program. New or used books (for a complete list of suggested book donations, please visit cbia.com/ed) for the Connecticut State Scholars Book Drive can be dropped off during the month of August at the following locations:

  • CBIA, 350 Church Street, 3rd Floor, Hartford
  • The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, 900 Chapel Street, 10th Floor, New Haven
  • New Haven Public Schools, Math Department, 444 Chapel Street, New Haven

The Connecticut State Scholars Program challenges all high school students to take tougher classes that will prepare them for success in college, in future careers and throughout their lives.

The Connecticut State Scholars Program is open to students in the New Haven and Danbury Public Schools, and is designed especially for the majority of students in the middle who are not working up to their potential. In New Haven, it is currently being piloted at Wilbur Cross High School and The Metropolitan Business Academy. The initiative is a partnership between the business community and the public school systems and has achieved a number of goals since the January kick-off:

  • Business volunteers made more than 30 classroom presentations to New Haven students, encouraging them to sign up for the Connecticut State Scholars Program.
  • This summer, 70 students who have signed up for the Scholars program are enrolled in the Scholars Summer Academy and are taking Algebra 1 and biology for high school credit.
  • In September, State Scholars will open in New Haven with two sites: Metropolitan Business Academy (MBA) and Wilbur Cross High School (WCHS). MBA will have about 75 freshmen and 50 sophomores signed up for Scholars. WCHS is anticipating 100 freshmen and 50 sophomores to be Scholars students.

The initiative is supported by:

  • The United Illuminating Company
  • The Bilco Company
  • SBC
  • WTNH
  • American Express
  • CBIA
  • The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce
  • Connecticut State Department of Education
  • Connecticut State Department of Higher Education
  • Gateway Community College
  • Yale University
  • The New Haven Public Education Fund

CBIA is one of just 12 state business organizations nationwide selected by the Center for State Scholars to receive a $300,000 grant to start up a scholars program. CBIA’s grant will be used for programs in New Haven, and Danbury public schools and at Vinal Technical High School in Middletown. CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members.
