The Connecticut Business & Industry Association, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and The United Illuminating Company, along with a number of New Haven area businesses, collected hundreds of books to help start libraries for New Haven students participating in the Connecticut State Scholars Program.

The donated books will be distributed to the two schools on Friday, Sept. 24, at 11:30 a.m. at Connecticut State Scholars and at 1 p.m. at the Metropolitan Business High School. Students at both high schools will be on hand, wearing their Connecticut State Scholars shirts to receive the books.

Donations came from employees of companies and organizations in the Greater New Haven area, including:

  • The Bilco Company

  • Read to Grow

  • New Haven Reads

  • Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic

  • Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield

  • Regional Water Authority

  • Gateway Community College

  • American Cancer Society

  • Connecticut Hospice

The New Haven Connecticut State Scholars Program kicked off in high gear earlier this month. Designed to encourage students to take more challenging courses in high school, the program works hand-in-hand with local businesses to challenge and support students who take on this more rigorous course of study.

The Connecticut State Scholars Program is open to students in the New Haven and Danbury public schools and Vinal Technical High School in Middletown. The program is designed especially for the majority of students who may not have been working up to their potential but are now serious-minded about high school.

CBIA is one of just 12 statewide business organizations nationwide selected by the Center for State Scholars to receive a grant to start up a scholars program.

CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members.
