BILCO VICE PRESIDENT OF ENGINEERING ELECTED TO CHAIR CBIA BOARD
Vice chairs and new member also elected

Roger Joyce, vice president of engineering at the Bilco Co., in West Haven, was elected chairman of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA). He will serve a one-year term, succeeding John A. Klein, chairman, president and CEO of People’s Bank in Bridgeport, whose term ended Dec. 13.

Bilco was founded in 1926 by Joyce’s grandfather, George W. Lyons Sr., and continues today under family ownership and management. The company pioneered the development of steel basement doors, vault and sidewalk doors, and roof access scuttles, and today is considered the world leader in its field. Headquartered in West Haven , Bilco employs 200 people in manufacturing facilities in Connecticut , Arkansas and New Mexico , and has a network of factory-trained representatives, dealers and distributors throughout the world.

Joyce has served on the CBIA board of directors since 1999, and is on several other boards, including those of the New Haven Inner City Business Strategy Initiative of the Governor’s Council on Competitiveness and Technology and the University of New Haven School of Business.

He received his engineering degree from Lafayette College in Easton, Penn. He lives in Guilford.

CBIA’s board also elected as vice chairs Meredith Reuben, CEO of Eastern Bag & Paper Group in Milford, and Charles W. Shivery, chairman, president and CEO of Northeast Utilities (NU) System, headquartered in Berlin, to serve one-year terms.

Eastern Bag & Paper Group was founded in 1918 by Reuben’s grandfather, Samuel Baum. Today, the company is one of the largest paper distributors in the Northeast, serving the retail, health care, industrial, janitorial and food service industries. The company, which employs 285 people, has distribution centers in Milford, Conn.; Tewksbury, Mass.; and Cranbury, N.J.

Reuben is the chairman of the board of Network Services' long-range planning committee and its operations technology committee. She serves on the Bridgeport Hospital Board of Directors and is a past board member of the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation, Network Services and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce.

She lives in Stamford with her husband and their three children.

Shivery joined Northeast Utilities in 2002, having retired earlier that year as co-president of the Constellation Energy Group, the parent company of Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) and other energy-related businesses. He held numerous management positions at BG&E and Constellation Energy Group. He joined BG&E in 1972 after four years in the U.S. Navy.

Shivery serves on the Connecticut Governor’s Council on Economic Competitiveness and Technology. He is on the board of directors of the Connecticut Center for Science and Exploration, the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Edison Electric Institute, the Electric Power Research Institute and Energy Insurance Mutual.

Shivery has a master in business administration from the University of Baltimore, and bachelor of arts and bachelor of engineering science degrees from The Johns Hopkins University. He lives in Avon.

The board also elected a new member, Robert M. Allessio, to serve a four-year term.

Allessio is president and CEO of The Southern Connecticut Gas Co. (SCG), headquartered in Bridgeport, and Connecticut Natural Gas Corp. (CNG), headquartered in Hartford. He is also chairman and CEO of Berkshire Gas Co. (BG), headquartered in Pittsfield, Mass.; president of Maine Natural Gas (MNG), headquartered in Brunswick, Maine; and president of New Hampshire Gas (NHG), headquartered in Keene, N.H. All of the companies are subsidiaries of Energy East Corp. (NYSE:EAS), located in Albany, N.Y.
Allessio is a member of the board of directors of the Northeast Gas Association. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Guild of Gas Managers and the Society of Gas Lighting. He is a member of the Dalton, Mass. Economic Development and Industrial Commission and is affiliated with the Pittsfield, Mass. Boys and Girls Club.
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Allessio is certified as a registered professional engineer. He received his master of business administration from Western New England College, and has completed the University of Michigan Utility Executive Training program.
