Immediate Release February 8, 2005 CONNECTICUT STATE SCHOLARS BUMPER STICKER WINNERS ANNOUNCED “STRIVE, FOCUS, DETERMINATION! Strive, focus, determination! This is Connecticut State Scholars. That’s the winning message in this year’s CBIA Connecticut State Scholars bumper sticker competition, held on Monday, Feb. 7 at the Connecticut State Scholars Academy and Metropolitan Business High School in New Haven. The winning bumper sticker was designed by two teams of students from the Metropolitan Business High School in New Haven. The winning team members will receive gift certificates to Barnes and Noble and will be given a pizza party, both donated by The United Illuminating Company in New Haven. The team’s design will be reproduced into bumper stickers by Penmar Industries in Norwalk, and will be distributed to students at both schools in March. Members of the winning team are:
Connecticut State Scholars Academy students Jose Vega, Alfred Bowman and Talisha Lewis, all of New Haven, were finalists in the competition. All three 9th graders were awarded gift certificates to Barnes & Noble. State Scholars students at both schools participated in the bumper sticker competition to help promote the program and explain why rigorous high school coursework is important to their future academic, career and business successes. The Connecticut State Scholars Program encourages and motivates high school students to complete a defined academic course of study that prepares them for successful transition into the college or technical training necessary to enter today’s competitive job market. “The designs and artwork were fantastic,” said J. Rick Cipot, operations and general manager, Penmar Industries, Inc., Norwalk, and one of the bumper sticker judges. “We were looking for a clear message that captures the essence of the Connecticut State Scholars Program and appeals to both students and parents,” said Shelly Saczynski, director of economic and community development, The United Illuminating Company, and a bumper sticker judge. “It was a difficult decision, but we believe the winning message ‘Strive, focus, determination! This is Connecticut State Scholars’ explains the program and encourages students to be part of it.” Roger Joyce, vice president of engineering at The Bilco Co. in West Haven; Oleyetta Priester, program coordinator for CBIA’s Education Foundation; and Brandon Lewis, an 11th grade student at the Metropolitan Business High School in New Haven, and president of the school’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, also judged the entries. The Connecticut State Scholars Program is a collaborative partnership among CBIA and the Office of the Governor; the state departments of Education and Higher Education; New Haven Public Schools; Danbury Public Schools; State Technical High Schools; the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce; the Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce; The United Illuminating Co.; GE Commercial Finance; and The Bilco Co. The Connecticut State Scholars Program is open to students in the New Haven and Danbury public schools and Vinal Technical High School in Middletown. The program is designed especially for the students who may not have been working up to their potential but are now serious-minded about high school. CBIA is one of just 12 statewide business organizations nationwide selected by the Center for State Scholars to receive a grant to start up a scholars program. CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members.
