Thousands of students from middle and high schools in the greater Waterbury region will see examples of today’s high-tech manufacturing and learn about jobs available in the industry at the School-to-Career Manufacturing Symposium, on Tuesday, March 8, and Wednesday, March 9, 2005. The symposium is part of the Waterbury Regional Chamber of Commerce’s two-day Manufacturing Showcase. The Connecticut Business & Industry Association and the Connecticut Community Colleges’ College of Technology’s Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing are among the sponsors of the event. Tuesday, March 8, and Wednesday, March 9, 2005 More than 2,000 middle and high school students from 40 schools will attend the symposium to learn about manufacturing careers and opportunities for training in today’s high-tech environment. The event will feature a virtual manufacturing plant depicting the six-stage creation of a product from the design phase to the final product. Students will view and experience short interactive presentations with real production equipment simulating a manufacturing process. The final part of the program will educate students on the high-tech careers available to them in manufacturing. A special program targeted toward young adults aged 18-26 will be held on March 8, from 2:30 – 4 p.m. The Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing addresses industry’s need for highly skilled workers in today’s manufacturing workplace through programs that provide resources to educators, students and adults in the community interested in learning new technologies in manufacturing. The center is directed by the Connecticut College of Technology (COT), a virtual organization representing technology curriculum geared toward engineering and technician training offered at Connecticut’s 12 community colleges. In addition to offering a two-year associate’s degree, these programs also give students full credit toward engineering and engineering technology degrees at designated Connecticut public colleges and universities. Partner institutions include Central Connecticut State University, the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut, Fairfield University, the University of New Haven and Charter Oak College. The center is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education program. CBIA is the statewide industry partner for the Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing. CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with 10,000 members. ### Media wishing to attend the event should contact Nancy Andrews, CBIA media relations manager, at 860-244-1957 or andrewsn@cbia.com. 350 Church
