CBIA PROGRAM HELPS RECRUIT YOUNG WOMEN IN HIGH-DEMAND TECHNOLOGY CAREERS

Women in Technology Workshop
April 29-30, 2005
8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tunxis Community College
Farmington

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA), in collaboration with the Connecticut Community College System’s College of Technology (COT), is offering a two-day workshop for math, science and technology high school and college educators interested in recruiting and retaining young women in nontraditional technology careers.

Donna Milgram, executive director of the national Institute for Women in Trades, Technology and Science, is the keynote speaker. A national spokesperson on the subject of gender equity, Milgram has testified before Congress on gender equity in the U.S. Department of Labor and took a leadership role in Cisco’s Gender Initiative, which is designed to increase the number of women in Cisco Networking academy programs.

The conference will feature a series of lectures, an interactive video, case studies and role playing. Participants will learn how to:

  • Encourage female students to proactively explore nontraditional technology careers such as engineering, precision machining, laser technology and industrial technology;
  • Recruit adult women into technology programs in community colleges; and
  • Help female students withstand negative peer pressure.

The event is funded by CBIA and COT grants from the National Science Foundation, including the COT’s Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing.

CBIA is Connecticut’s largest business organization, with 10,000 member companies.
