CBIA’S 191st ANNUAL MEETING
Raising the bar on educational achievement in Connecticut

One of Connecticut’s greatest strengths has always been a highly educated workforce. It has allowed our businesses to be world leaders in innovation and productivity. But today, that advantage is threatened as other countries invest in education and training. Connecticut still has one of the best education systems in the country, but significant achievement gaps persist among low-income, urban and minority students. And the U.S. is falling behind countries like China and India in science, math and engineering.

Hundreds of business leaders from across the state will gather for CBIA’s annual meeting on Oct. 25, at 5 p.m., to hear keynote speaker Michael Cohen, president of Achieve Inc., discuss “Raising the Bar on Educational Achievement in Connecticut.”

Wed., Oct. 25, 2006
5-5:45 p.m.
Crowne Plaza Hotel
(formerly the Radisson Hotel)
Route 372 in Cromwell, CT
Exit 21 off I-91

Cohen will explain why it’s important to focus attention and resources on raising the bar for educational achievement. It’s the way to ensure that all of Connecticut’s young people can achieve productive careers, employees can continually adapt to changing technologies, and our state's economy and businesses can remain competitive in the global marketplace.

Created by the nation’s governors and business leaders in 1996, Achieve helps states raise academic standards and achievement so that all students graduate ready for college, the workforce and citizenship.

During the meeting, there also will be a special tribute to Kenneth O. Decko, honoring his 36 years of distinguished service to CBIA, 26 of those years as its leader. Under his leadership, CBIA became one of the largest and most successful business organizations in the country. Decko officially retires on Oct. 31, 2006.

A cocktail reception will follow at 6 p.m.

Media wishing to attend the event should contact Nancy Andrews, CBIA media relations manager, at 860-244-1957 or andrewsn@cbia.com.
