Six schools, chosen as “Vanguard Schools” for achieving high academic goals and outperforming peer schools on standardized tests scores and assessments, are being recognized at a statewide Vanguard Conference.

Nov. 9, 2006
8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Connecticut Grand Hotel, Waterbury

The schools being recognized are:

  • Dwight School, Hartford
  • Amistad Academy, New Haven

The Connecticut Vanguard Schools Initiative is a public/private partnership between the Connecticut Department of Education, the state Education Resource Center and the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) Education Foundation. The program identifies and recognizes schools that have demonstrated success in improving educational performance. The Vanguard Schools then share their successful strategies and best practices with other school districts to help them replicate these effective programs.

Besides the recognition ceremony, the conference includes workshops on a number of topics and best practices including:

  • Connecticut’s accountability for learning initiative – Making standards work: Data-driven decision making and effective teaching strategies
  • Vanguard rubric for school improvement planning
  • Early intervention process and examining student work protocols
  • Literacy and numeracy instruction
  • Academic goal setting using curriculum-based assessments
  • School culture promoting students, family and community relations
  • Building coherence among school improvement initiatives

There will also be a round table discussion identifying how the business community can participate in the Vanguard Schools Initiative to help improve the education of Connecticut’s future workforce.

The conference is sponsored by the Connecticut State Department of Education and the State Education Resource Center in collaboration with the CBIA, McCarter and English, and Bank of America.
