EASTERN BAG & PAPER GROUP CEO ELECTED TO CHAIR CBIA BOARD

Meredith Reuben, CEO of Eastern Bag & Paper Group in Milford, was elected chair of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA). She will serve a one-year term, succeeding Roger Joyce, vice president of engineering at the Bilco Co., in West Haven whose term ended Dec. 12.

CBIA’s Board also elected as vice chairs Charles W. Shivery, chairman, president and CEO of Northeast Utilities (NU), headquartered in Berlin, and John Y. Kim, president of Prudential Retirement, in Hartford, to serve one-year terms.

“We are very excited to have Meredith as chair and Chuck and John as vice chairs of the CBIA Board,” said John R. Rathgeber, CBIA president and CEO. “Meredith, Chuck and John are widely respected and recognized as leaders in the business community. We look forward to working with them to advance policies that will further improve Connecticut’s business climate.”

 Meredith Reuben

Reuben joined Eastern Bag & Paper Group in 1979 and was named CEO in 1990. The company was founded in 1918 by Reuben’s grandfather, Samuel Baum. Today, the company is one of the largest paper distributors in the Northeast, serving the retail, health care, industrial, janitorial and food service industries. The company, which employs 300 people, has distribution centers in Milford, Conn; Tewksbury, Mass., and Cranbury, N.J.

Reuben has served on the CBIA Board of Directors since 2001, and is chair of the board of Network Services’ Long Range Planning Committee and past chair of their Operations Technology Committee. She is the vice chair of the Bridgeport Hospital Board of Directors and is a past board member of the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation, Network Services, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, and the Governor’s Task Force on Ethics. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Tufts University and her law degree from Boston University. She lives in Stamford with her husband and three children.

Charles W. Shivery

Shivery joined Northeast Utilities in 2002, having retired earlier that year as co-president of the Constellation Energy Group, the parent company of Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) and other energy-related businesses. He held numerous management positions at BG&E and Constellation Energy Group. He joined BG&E in 1972 after four years in the U.S. Navy.

Shivery serves on the Connecticut Governor’s Competitiveness Council. He is on the board of directors of the Connecticut Center for Science and Exploration, the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Edison Electric Institute, the Electric Power Research Institute and Energy Insurance Mutual.

Shivery has a master’s in business administration from the University of Baltimore, and bachelor of arts and bachelor of engineering science degrees from The Johns Hopkins University. He lives in Avon.

 John Y. Kim

Kim was named president of Prudential Retirement in 2004. Prior to joining Prudential, Kim was president of CIGNA Retirement & Investment Services. He also held chief executive and senior management positions at some of the nation’s leading financial services companies, including BondBook LLC, Aeltus Investment Management, Mitchell Hutchins Institutional Investors and Aetna Life & Casualty.

Kim is a chartered financial analyst and a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, the Hartford Society of Security Analysts, and the Association of Investment Management and Research. He holds NASD Series 7 and 24 credentials. Kim has a master’s in business administration in finance from the University of Connecticut, and a bachelor's in business administration in finance and accounting from the University of Michigan. He lives in Farmington.
