SCHWERDTLE PRESIDENT ELECTED TO CBIA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) elected Katherine A. Saint to a four-year term on its board of directors at its Oct. 25 Annual Meeting.

Saint is president of Schwedtle Stamp Co. Inc., in Bridgeport. She is one of 14 new members elected to the CBIA board, who will begin their terms Dec. 1.

CBIA is the state’s largest business organization, with 10,000 member companies throughout Connecticut. The board of directors approves the organization’s plans, policies and strategies, and particularly focuses on ways to make Connecticut a better place to do business and create jobs.

Saint oversees the daily operation of Schwerdtle, a 127-year-old manufacturer of marking devices. She represents the fourth generation of family members working in the business.

She began working fulltime at the company in 1991, and has held numerous positions including sign engraving, customer service, sales and production manager. She was named president in 2004.

She is involved in a number of business organizations, as well as nonprofit groups in Fairfield County. Saint is secretary of the Manufacturers Education and Training Alliance (METAL) and a member of the executive committee of the board of directors for the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce. She is also co-chair of the education committee of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council.

Saint is actively involved in programs to educate students and help improve their understanding of the skills needed to enter the manufacturing field. She works with METAL’s business development committee and helped create a distance-learning program with Housatonic Community College. The program combines classroom instruction and manufacturing training on the shop floor of actual companies, to better prepare students for careers in manufacturing.

She is a member of Housatonic Community College’s Regional Advisory Council, and on the search committee for the next president of the college. She is a member of the board of directors and the education committee of the New Haven Manufacturers’ Association.

Saint has received numerous awards for her community service, including being named a finalist in the 2006 “Women of Innovation Award,” presented by the Connecticut Technology Council; the 2005 Bridgeport Regional Business Council’s “Impact Award” for outstanding leadership; and the 2004 Connecticut Community Colleges “Award of Merit.”

She lives in Southbury with her husband, Grant. They have three children.
