The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) elected James P. Torgerson to a four-year term on its board of directors at its Oct. 25 Annual Meeting.

Torgerson is president and CEO of UIL Holdings Corp. and CEO of The United Illuminating Co. (UI), in New Haven. UIL is the holding company for UI. He is one of 14 new members elected to the CBIA board, who will begin their terms Dec. 1.

CBIA is the state’s largest business organization, with 10,000 member companies throughout Connecticut. The board of directors approves the organization’s plans, policies and strategies, and particularly focuses on ways to make Connecticut a better place to do business and create jobs.

Prior to joining UIL Holdings Corp., Torgerson served as president and CEO of the Midwest ISO and was a member of its board of directors. He also served as CFO for several gas and electric utilities in North America. Before his work in the utility industry, Torgerson held a number of finance and strategic planning positions, including vice president of development for the Diamond Shamrock Corp.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Torgerson received a B.A. in accounting from Cleveland State University.

He lives in Branford with his wife, Mary Ann, and their three children.
