UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN STUDENTS RECEIVE CBIA RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
Program will provide students with the research skills needed to enter today's job market

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) today announced the names of three University of New Haven (UNH) students selected to participate in a summer undergraduate research fellowship program. The fellowships will give UNH students the opportunity to conduct research and learn the skills necessary for successful careers in the bioscience or biomedical fields.

"The University of New Haven is pleased to be participating in CBIA's research fellowship program again this year,” said Dr. David Harding, chairman, University of New Haven chemistry and chemical engineering department. “Last year's initial program was a big success and students are looking forward to enhancing their academic training through these fellowships, which provide real-world experiences thus better preparing our students for careers in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.”

The three University of New Haven students selected for the program are :

  • Courtney Jones of Moosup, Conn., a sophomore biochemistry/chemistry major
  • Lauren Mularski, Middletown, Conn., a senior chemistry/forensic science major
  • Kelli Sladick, Columbia Station, Ohio, a forensic science/biochemistry major

The students were chosen for their academic abilities and their interest in pursuing a career involving laboratory research. They will receive financial support to participate in on-campus summer research under the guidance of UNH faculty. At the conclusion of the 10-to 12-week program, the undergraduates will present their research findings to a group of university scientists, industry experts and students on the UNH campus.

"The goal of this partnership with the University of New Haven is to provide students with the skills needed to enter the pharmaceutical industry and to provide Connecticut businesses with the highly skilled, highly trained workforce they need to be innovative and competitive in the global marketplace,” said Judith Resnick, CBIA director of workforce development and training, and the deputy director of the association's Education Foundation.

The fellowship program is made possible through a U.S. Department of Labor H-1B grant administered by CBIA.
