FOUR CONNECTICUT SCHOOLS RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AT STATEWIDE VANGUARD CONFERENCE


Four Connecticut schools, chosen as “Vanguard Schools” for achieving high academic goals and outperforming peer schools on standardized tests scores and assessments, are being recognized at a statewide Vanguard Schools Conference.

The schools being recognized are:

  • Hamilton Avenue Elementary, Greenwich
  • Bristol Eastern High School, Bristol
  • Platt Technical High School, Milford
  • Ponus Ridge Middle School, Norwalk

The Connecticut Vanguard Schools Initiative is a public/private partnership among the Connecticut Department of Education, the State Education Resource Center and the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) Education Foundation. The program identifies and recognizes schools that have demonstrated success in improving educational performance. The Vanguard Schools then share their successful strategies and best practices with other school districts to help them replicate these effective programs.

Besides the recognition ceremony, the conference includes workshops on a number of topics and best practices, including:

  • School/business partnerships for the 21st century
  • High school reform in Connecticut : Recommendations on secondary school design
  • Supporting school improvement through family, community and business partnerships
  • A clear and common focus of high expectations for all children
  • Vanguard rubric for school improvement planning
  • Professional learning communities
  • Literacy and numeracy instruction
  • Academic goal setting using curriculum-based assessments
  • Early intervention process and examining student work protocols

The conference is sponsored by the Connecticut State Department of Education and the State Education Resource Center in collaboration with CBIA, Bank of America, McCarter & English, and The United Illuminating Co.
